NEW DEBATE!!!

If you want a good job to be done, just do it by yourself vs avoid stomach ulcers by free-riding in teams.

  1. I think that it depends of your personality. I couln't be a free-riding without feeling bad, so maybe I would have more stomach ulcers than doing by myself. This is because, if I fail alone, no one else is going to fall with me.

Maybe alone I couldn't stand it and I would need help from others, in this case I should do my best in order to achieve the goal.

mmm...from my point of view it depends on the task, simple tasks are better done by myself but i need other people to achieve complex ones.
I used to prefer working alone, and do it in my way, but i have to recognize that working in groups is an interesting experience, even bearing free-riding. With a good coordination and tasks division, big groups can carry out excellent works! So, maybe we are force to accept our lazy mates to achieve some goals, just tell off them a bit, as many times as necessary, and let them know that they are an important part of the group, and their abilities are essential to finish the work.

Sometimes, being too perfectionist, mixed with having a team with under-average skills leads you to take the control of everything and the others to take advantage of the situation and free-ride.

When this happens... what can you do? People, including yourself, assume their role: working for the others, and free-riding because the work will be finished anyway.
This happened to me in my scout group. Now, I'm out of it. What a pity...

  4. I am more the worker person. I don't know...but I cannot wait till the others would finish all the work without helping, just watching...So, free-riding is nothing for me. But I also have experience with people being good in that...
Besides this, like Laura, I also recognized that in most cases, depending on the task and the people being in a group, a group works much more better than I could do it alone. A well-working group in which everyone is doing his/her part, can do great work and success.

  5. Personally, I think that it depends totally in the task and the group members. Doing a work where all phases and task are related, there is needed a lot of coordination, so aptitude is essential. In this kind of situation to pull all members toward a goal, can be a difficult task.
However, especially in difficult task, the support of team members is crucial for a goal achievement.
    Thanks

  6. To be honest, I am not those kinds of people that fold their arms while others work, I need to pay attention of everything and try to help in any way I can. However, I prefer doing tasks in a group in which each member work what the leader assigned to them, rather than toiling on my own.

  7. In my opinion, it is not depends as much as the "topic" or "objective" as it depends on the team you are working with. For instance, I experienced having a great time and not feeling confortable with the work we were processing and vice versa. For a great success, it has to be a group with which you feel integrate, confortable and a working member and the task also has to be of your interest.

  8. I think that it only depend on the group. If you are in a group where everybody work and do the tasks which are assigned you will feel very confortable, but if you are in a group where there are people who does not do the tasks probably the next time you will prefer to work alone.

  9. I totally agree with Elena, it all depends in your previous experiences with working in groups. At the beginning of this course I knew that I was going to be asked to work in groups and I wasn't sure if that was a good thing. I thought that it was better to work alone.
After all my experiences I know that there are quite better results if I work in group and take full responsibility of the role that i have to play in it.

  10. I agree with Nico, I think that it depends in your previous experience but also depends in the task that have to be done. However, I prefer doing the work on my own because if i fail doing something it my fault and no harm others.

  11. In my case, when it comes to an evaluated work, I prefer to do it by myself, because I have my own, personal, work rythm (slow) and it's more comfortable, clear and easy. I think that for group working to be fulfilling, several ideal requisites must be present. It is true what you all have said, it depends on the group members and involvent in the task, but on a general basis, I think that everyone should be able to express their individuality and point of view (regardless of being in a group or not) as a unique and genuine result or conclussion, and should contrast it with the other's conclussions. If we're in a group, we're able extract a combined result of everybody's work, but only if everybody has worked at his/her most, being up-to-date in the topic, actively involved.
When it comes to a free time activity, it's always better to do it in company (music, sports, clubbing, rioting, etc.). They're designed for that purpose.
