RESULTS OF THE REPLICATED EXPERIMENT OF ASCH (1950) ON FIRST IMPRESSIONS IN ORDER TO PROVE HALO EFFECTS ON CENTRAL TRAITS:
FIRST EXPERIMENTAL CONDITION (“COLD” CENTRAL TRAIT): COMPETITIVE, SERIOUS, EDUCATED, SMART, DEMANDING, RATIONAL, ELEGANT, SELF-CONFIDENT, ANALYTICAL, FRIENDLY, COMPETITIVE, PIGHEADED, TIMID, COLD, SEXUALLY GOER, ACTIVE, STRONG PERSONALITY, CALCULATING, RESPECTFUL, INTELLIGENT, RESPECTFUL, MEAN, EGOCENTRIC, UNHAPPY, SERIOUS, GOOD, CONCEITED.
SECOND EXPERIMENTAL CONDITION (“WARM” CENTRAL TRAIT): SELF-CONFIDENT, RATIONAL, CONSTANT, FRIENDLY, NICE, INTELLIGENT, GOOD, PLEASANT, COOPERATIVE, COMPETITIVE, EXTROVERT, TALKATIVE, CLOSE, EMPATHIC, HARD-WORKER, INTELLIGENT, KIND, SWEET, GULLIBLE, EXTROVERT, SUCCESSFUL, WELL-MANNERED, NICE, KIND, HONEST, NICE, HARD-WORKER.

CONTENT ANALYSIS: GREATER NEGATIVITY PERCEIVED IN 1ST CONDITION “COLD” AND VICE VERSE.
CONCLUSION: INITIAL IMPRESSIONS WILL CONDITION BY HALO EFFECT THE ASSESSMENTS OF OTHERS ACCORDING TO CERTAIN CENTRAL TRAITS WHICH ARE CULTURALLY REINFORCED.
We also did this class exercise. It is a very good example and method to show the halo-effect. It is quite effective to demonstrate it. I was surprised and didn't expect such differences between the adjectives we had to add. One word can change a lot!

It is amazing how first impressions change with a simple different word. There are characteristic that influence the complete impression of someone. Something I would like to comment on is that in Mediterranean culture the meaning of “cold” and “warm” person, could have a greater impact on the created image of the person.
ReplyDeleteThis example shows us that we might be very careful about what and how we say things, because if we change one word or the order of them in a sentence, we may alter the meaning of our speech.

As Soledad said, to me this exercise meant that we should always choose our words carefully. A single word or expresion can create misunderstandings (happened to every one of us more than once).

Wow, this is definitely a very interesting topic, it makes us realize how hard human beings abuse of heuristics. Looking good, creating a good first impression is more important than it seems; not everybody has the patience or the emotional intelligence to be able to look into someone's true personality. It is a fact that looking good and competent can provide us more opportunities to succeed in a job interview or even when asking out someone. In think this is an evolutively advantageous behavior, and there is a lot of research about it from different perspectives.
ReplyDeleteOne of them is this psychosocial study by Asch (1950), which illustrates (and with highly significant differences) an everyday life phenomenon.
